Queen City Street Choir
Take a Closer Look
The Queen City Street Choir was founded at Christ Church Cathedral in October 2022 to engage with Cincinnati's most marginalized residents through the restorative power of song.
Since its formation, the choir has grown from a handful of singers to upwards of 60 singers who meet each Sunday to sing songs of faith, hope, laughter, and love.
The choir started as a vision by Founder and Artistic Director, Jason Fishburn, who directed a similarly missioned choir in Indianapolis prior to relocating to Cincinnati. He simply walked into Christ Church Cathedral in the summer of 2022 and pitched the idea. He was immediately received with open and loving arms - just as the singers in the choir continue to be welcomed each week.
Soon after the choir's inception, Christ Church Cathedral began providing a warm meal ahead of the weekly choir rehearsal. Singers meet at 1:30 p.m. to eat and start singing at 2:00 p.m. Plus, Christ Church Cathedral has partnered with The Freestore Food Bank to provide an onsite social worker each Sunday to assist singers with birth certificates, medical insurance, and other resources in the city.
"The opportunity to sing should be afforded to everyone regardless if a person is housed or not", says Jason. Research shows that singing lowers stress levels and reduces anxiety. Singing also builds community and social inclusion. Plus, singing strengthens the immune system. The health benefits coupled with the sheer joy that singing sparks in each singer are priceless - singing is joy!
